Labor Doula

As a labor doula, my job is to come alongside you and your partner to support you in any way you might need.  Going through labor, especially for the first time can be frightening and is so uncertain, as every labor is so unique.  As your doula, I provide mom with emotional and physical support to manage labor in a way that helps you feel in control so that you can look back on your birth experience with confidence that you made decisions based on complete understanding of the situation.  Every birth is unique and I adapt to what you need at any given time because we can’t predict how labor will unfold.

A labor doula should not take over the role of the coach, but come alongside them to offer additional help, and uninterrupted support to mom while coach takes a break when needed.  Most mothers can manage labor with little intervention because they find a rhythm and with the loving presence of their partner move through labor knowing pain means progress and are therefore confident this will end with the birth of their beautiful baby.  Sometimes if labor is different than what they expect, anxiety rises and they look to me for additional support and my expertise in helping them cope with a longer labor.  My involvement ebbs and flows with each contraction.

I believe in providing professional support that is most beneficial for you.  Many moms want to labor at home with their partner in a quiet relaxed atmosphere by themselves and when labor changes to strong active contractions is when they want the extra support of a doula, which is typically when they are ready to head to their birth place.

Doula Services Not Provided:

  • Perform clinical tasks, such as blood pressure, fetal heart checks, vaginal exams, etc.
  • Make decisions for the client. The doula can help the client get the information necessary to make an informed decision and can also remind the client if there is a departure from their birth plan or if things are going differently then what was talked about concerning the client’s wishes, but the decisions are the client’s responsibility.
  • Speak to the staff on the clients’ behalf regarding matters where health care decisions are being made. The doula will discuss the client’s concerns and suggest options, but the client or partner will speak directly to the clinical staff.

I want to be available to moms with any budget and all needs, at the same time feeling comfortable that my family knows that this is my job and I’m helping to support them, so they understand when I may be gone for 10-15 hours at a time.

My pricing is a little out of the box.  I have decided to basically charge a per hour rate.  My clients have appreciated only paying for the time I’m with them.  With a higher broad spectrum package a client with a very short labor has felt it was a very expensive investment and for clients who had very long labors they feel bad I’m being unfairly compensated.  A per hour rate seems like a reasonable solution.  My initial package covers the cost of all visits, plus the first 4 hours of labor.  Beyond that, it becomes an hourly rate.
